Does the "waiting for christ" have an eternal aspect?

That is, first we note that it is parallel to the end of the old testament,in ezekiel. Where elijah is anticipated, before the "great and terrible day of the lord" in triumph and revenge. (And yet, the actual messiah was not officially expected. And they never emended that situation.)
