Why can't some people let go of the good ole days?

there was a group of fraternity brothers who were talking about how they wish they were born in the 1800s so they could lynch their problems away...and they wanted to lynch an African American female because she was too smart for her own good and should be eradicated. What would cause someone to believe those days were GOOD? or even yearn for such carnage?
