Why did I lose my water on first day of spring thaw?

Today was the first day of very warm weather for this time of year in Vermont. Yet when I came home, it seems the water pipe has frozen underground. What happened? It doesn't appear to be a frozen pipe in the house, there's no water coming from the source that feeds all the faucets. This is a gravity fed spring with a pipe coming through the slab.
